Why leadership development isn't developing our leaders

In a recent HBR article, author Deborah Rowland contends that many leadership development efforts fail as they set employees in a setting that is not representative of the type of leaders we need. 

​

At the heart leadership development, a program or initiative needs to:

​

  1. Be experiential

  2. Influence participants’ “being,” not just their “doing”

  3. Be placed into its wider, systemic context;

  4. Be facilitated and guided by "sherpas" versus subject matter experts

​

Think twice before relaying on the tired classroom 'leadership development' class if you really expect results and want to create purposeful leaders.
